NASA along with a group of collaborators used CartoDB in an application known as NEEMO to experiment with the idea of using citizen scientists to mark up sea floor images. Collected by NASA astronauts over a two week mission to work on traverse planning and extreme environmental training, the images were made available to the public through a game like interface. Volunteers moved along the seafloor, observing and annotating biodiversity, contributing over 25,000 classifications.
